Exclusion screening
Exclusion screening is checking the names of employees, contractors, vendors and owners against exclusion lists, before working with them and then on a schedule. Most health care organizations check monthly.
What to know
- OIG’s 2013 bulletin advises checking the LEIE before engaging someone and periodically afterwards. Monthly checks line up with the LEIE’s monthly update.
- A full check covers the LEIE, SAM.gov and the Medicaid list of each state the organization works in.
- A name match is a starting point: it becomes a finding only once identity is confirmed.
- Keeping a dated record of each check is what shows an auditor that screening happened.
