False positive (screening)
A false positive is a screening result that resembles an exclusion list entry but turns out to be a different person or organization once identifiers are compared. Most name-only matches are false positives.
What to know
- Comparing NPI, date of birth, license number or address usually rules a false positive out quickly.
- Record the comparison and the decision, so the same name is not reviewed from scratch next month.
