NPI (National Provider Identifier)
An NPI is the unique 10-digit number every HIPAA-covered health care provider uses on claims, issued through the CMS NPPES system. It identifies a provider without carrying any information about them.
What to know
- Individuals get one NPI for life. Organizations can hold several.
- The NPPES NPI Registry is public, so the number is a reliable way to tell two providers with the same name apart.
- The LEIE records an NPI for many of its entries, which makes it one of the strongest identifiers for verifying a potential match.
